Digital Cable and HDTV

Hello,

I was wondering if there is any way to get HDTV through digital cable. Are there any set top boxes that would work? I know DirectTV has theres, but are there any for digital cable?

Also I wanted to know which boxes you guys recommend. I have a nice HD *compatible* TV but dont know what to hook it up to make it really sweet.

I dont know too much about the whole HDTV and Digital TV stuff so any info would be helpful.

Thanks,
HAsh

Your cable provider can tell you if any HDTV content is available on their system and if so what equipment you would need to view it. Where I live even though there is digital cable the only way to recieve any HDTV programming is via satellite (Dish Network or DirecTV) or using an antenna to recieve over-the-air broadcasts.

If the HDTV content is available on your cable system, just hook it up to your HDTV tuner and watch. No other equipment would be necessary.

It's essentially the same as over-the-air (OTA) stuff. Digital or not, the content has to be pushed through the system or you won't get it. Nearly all digital TV is transmitted on a UHF channel...and different than the stations traditional channel number. When received by the digital TV, the channel number goes from being "Channel 5" to "Channel 5.1" (or more..5.2, 5.3, etc). We have a station in Chicago that has SIX additional digital channels in addition to it's "usual" channel.

SO, your cable company may offer "Channel 5" on Cable Channel 5, but then offer the digital version (channel 5.1) or cable channel 65 (or anywhere else on the cable spectrum).

Good Luck

You could move to Portland! I'm not sure what this means Article, but apparently Portland, Houston and Indianapolis have large numbers of early adopters and are going to push Digital TV technologies and delivery systems initially with DC following later this year.

So far however, just satellite for HDTV, and very limited even at that. Get a nice DVD player and enjoy some DVD goodness with that set 'till then.

thanks everyone,

i live in DC so comcast is my provider. they said they do not have the HD stuff yet in this area. They said maybe another year or so. I guess ill just have to wait til then.

you think its worth buying a HD reciever for regular antenna (UHF or whatevr its called)?

Depends on how much HD programming is available in your market and how much the HD receiver costs.
