DigiCams!

Okay, I am a complete Digi-Cam noobie. I don't even know what a megapixel is. Right now the price I am looking at should be less than $300. Anyone have any digicam recommendations? Its not going to be used by a expert just taking picture outside at events and family parties etc... Thx

Aim for $200 - $250 and use the difference on accessories (more media, definitely rechargeable batteries, camera case, etc.)

Canon PowerShot A40, A60, A70, S200 or S230.

Fuji Finepix 2650 ($160)

Sony P72

Um, is that less then 300?

Personally I love my canon s200, look at the the s230. It's a nice little camera in your price range.

My Fuji 2600z I think is a great camera for the price. I'm not sure of the current price they're going for, but it takes wonderful pictures at 1600x1200 resolution. I also picked up a memory card for it at sams club for $30 that will allow me to put 1000 or so pictures on one card.

Yea, I guess you're right. THe cheapest price I've ever seen is for sale is around $320, but I think the MSRP is $399. Sorry 🙁

get in on the canon a70 + 64mb cf card for $250+tax at Officemax deal (HD)

I just upgraded from the Canon A40, and very pleased.

It is 3.1 megapixel, 3.0 optical zoom.

What is a mega pixel exactly? I really don't care if it fits in your pocket, however quality photo's inside or out are required. 😀

Oh, I am also guessing if I get a memory card I'll have to get some sort of device that accepts it? Or could I leave the card in the camera and use a usb cable? That would be much easier as I have one 😀

A megapixel is 2^20 pixels, or 1,048,576 pixels.

Wow, the quality of those is amazing. How much did the camera cost you?

I don't think anyone really clearly defined the megapixel concept. Digital photos are a set of pixels, just like a computer monitor. A full screen at 1024x768 would be 786,432 pixels or approximately 0.75 megapixel. To provide a quality picture for full screen, you would want more like a 2 megapixel camera to allow for cropping and oversampling. An 8 x 10 inch print on a 300 dpi printer is 2400 x 3000 or 7,200,000 pixels or almost 7 megapixels. In the real world, it takes about 3 to 4 megapixel camera for good 8 x 10 inch prints (because you can't really see 300 dpi).

When buying a camera, after you get up to 3 megapixel or so, it becomes more important to have a good lens and good exposure control. Also, look for a camera using Compact Flash (CF) memory because it's cheaper and using AA batteries because rechargeable NiMH AA's are relatively cheap.

Bump, still wondering which Camera I should get. I am really interested in the S230 or the A70 Canon, 3.2 MegaPixels just getting near the $300 mark. My mom doesn't like that price 🙁

Around $600 for the camera, and like $120 for 512MB compact flash
