Canon S40 vs. Canon G2?

I'm leaning towards the G2, but it's kinda big. Both are 4 Megapixel and use the same system, but I dunno if the pix are of the same quality.

However, the G2 is not that much bigger than my 3 MP Kodak DC4800 though.

All three are OS X.1 and Windows 2000 compatible.

Anybody have first hand experience? Other options?

g2 is nice. I have it. Its somewhat bulky, but I got it because its one of the few camera so feature-packed that you can still fit in your pocket. Flash is adequate, but you'll have to manually adjust flash compensation if you want best quality. Dont forget on the G2 you can add a bigger flash via the hotshoe on top, not sure if the s40 can do that or not.

the optical zoom comes up a bit short at 3x (4x?) , digital takes it to 11x, but the camera is unable to clearly show you what you are shooting on the LCD at 11x-you kinda just have to guess if its focus or not. The swing out LCD screen is a critical feature, IMO, letting you hold the camera low or high and still see what your shooting.

Quality is outstanding. I'l put up a few photos on my server and post em here so you can see the quality and detail.

the key thing IMO is the g2 has a 2.0 lens while the s30/40 is still stuck w/ a 2.8 lens (lower is better). but that's me.. which is why i decided to go for a oly 4040... now all i need is to not have any more unexpected diversions of my money.. grrr.

one thing tho, either canon you get, i don't think you'll be disappointed at all in quality. I used to have an s10 and that thing was great qualitywise... just very lacking w/ a 2x optical.

I replaced a Kodak 4800 with a Canon G2 and couldn't be happier. I never could get decent indoor shots with the Kodak, but the G2 is wonderful in this regard.

Head over to dpreview and dig around in the Canon forums to find out the differences between the S40 and G2. I didn't really look at the S40 before I bought my G2. From what I've seen on the dpreview forums the G2 is considered a better camera. I don't think you can add filters, lenses or external flashes to the S40 like you can the G2.

If you get the G2 make sure you search around for third party software to replace the zoombrowser. The canon software is buggy at best.

Hope this helps.

<< yeah, the f2 lens is pretty nice. :)

I'll leave these up for a couple days...

all of these are handheld, so there might be DOF/focus errors, but you can get the idea. Not compressed in photoshop, but compressed at the medium setting in the camera.

Holy crap those are nice. :) I didn't realize the G2 had the f/2 lens. Pretty fast.

The DC4800 doesn't have a focus assist light. I did upgrade the firmware to 1.04 and it was better, but it wouldn't work in the low light conditions. It seems to work fine now in average indoor light now though. The flash ain't too strong though but like the G2 had the ability to use an external flash.

I also have an Olympus 3030, but that's mainly for work. It seems better in low light than the Kodak but isn't as good for long exposure type shots since the Kodak can take the pic twice and filter out the noise.

no doubt, G2.

i would recommend holding off until you find some info on any new cameras. but if you want one, the G2 is a winnar.

warning: The adapter tube that is needed to use the wide angle/telephoto lenses on the G2 puts the lens out far enough so it blocks the focus assist and the flash. If you decide to get one of canon optional accessory lenses, I would recommend an external flash as well.

Duly noted. Bummer since all of my external flashes are completely manual with no focus assist. :( I suppose it's not a big deal though.

By the way, do you think US$425 would be a good selling price for a Kodak DC4800 with AC adapter, extra battery, extra travel charger, lens adapter, telephoto, closeup, wideangle, and AV cord?

Check dpreview for info on adapters. I saw some people over there using some that supposedly doesn't block the internal flash. Not sure what kind it was or if it blocked the focus lamp or not.

G2 gives me goosebumps. I have an S110, but the flash and zoom are weaksauce. I need a power digicam.

BTW: Does G2 have mpeg video? What is max seconds on it?
