DigiCam Memory stick question

Hi I have a sony digital camera that's around 2-3 years old. The model is DSC-P51 and the manual says it uses the original sony memory stick (the lavender one) for flash memory. I've been looking online and have been somewhat confused by all the different types of proprietary sony flash memory.

My question is as follows. Will I be able to use a memory sitck pro in my camera if it was made when only the original memory stick was out? They are the same shape and size from what I can see, but I am unsure if I will be able to use the newer memory stick pro in my somewhat dated camera.

Also, what are the differences between memory stick, memory stick pro, memory stick duo, and memory stick pro duo? All of these types of memory kinda make me wish I just got a camera that accepted SD cards.

Thanks in advance.
