digicam expansion memory

Is digicam expansion memory volatile or non volatile? Meaning can you take one out and save it, pop in another and take more pics or does it need power from the batteries to stay alive?

I am not positive but I think there is a little battery in the card, I know the Gameboy's have batteries in them.
