Diffrent windows 2000

I have an original copy of Windows 2000 Advanced Server. My question is, is this the same windows 2000 that I can use on my regular computer (not server), or are there diffrent versions of Windows 2000 that are diffrent. I think it is time that I upgrade my boxes from Win 98se and Win ME, and was wondering if I should go with Win XP or use the copy of windows 2000 I already have? So basically can the version of Win 2K Advanced Server be used on my gaming rig?

You simply have to untick a box with "Show this screen on bootup" or something along those lines.
Then the "manage your server" screen will never appear again and the machine will be a regular workgroup pc till you tell it otherwise.
You can use all the regular Win2K service packs and patches as well on Advanced server.
So in essence, yes you could use it as a gaming rig, but things like some anti virus software wont run unless you get a server edition of the product.

I don't suggest using advanced server if you plan on doing desktop chores, especially with playing games. I had a lot of issues running certain games with advanced server, which just went away went I installed professional version instead.

If I were you, I would sell the Win2K advanced server, and buy Windows XP. Your computer will work better (a lot of programs and games dont work well on server OS), and your wallet will be FAT!!!!!

Ive got an NFR of Advanced Server Ive used for a couple years as a desktop. Just had to NOT install all the fat, and I disabled a lot of the server services. Never had an issue using it like Win2K Pro, except as someone has mentioned many antivirus programs want you to use thier server editions. I just dont use antivirus, and depend on my router and online antivirus scanners. Works fine for me. I dont game a lot but had no problems with UT2003 or flight sims.

If it isnt an NFR you might do well selling it and end with enough to buy several Win2k Pro or XP
