Difficulty opening ports to linux box

Opened up 12345 on the router, I ran a port scanner and it's showing the port is closed.
Is there a software firewall in place? I'm using a clean install of linux mint.

It's possible that UFW is installed and enabled by default. See if this helps.

Ah yes, UFW was enabled. But I just tried disabling it and the port is still blocked?

You may need to reboot before it takes effect.

I just tried rebooting. No go. :\

I tried several ports as well, 45000, 12345, etc...

What does sudo ufw status say?

What modem and router are you using?

I'm using a Linksys WRT54GS. I don't know about the modem, it's the internet from my lab at a university.

The professor in the lab helped me open the ports and he doesn't have an idea why it's not working. The other ports opened for other systems work fine.
