Difficult modding question.

Okay all of you serious modders out there....

Is there a way to detect externally (Hardware preferably, software if no other way) what OS you are booting up to in a multi-boot box?

For example, if I wanted to have a LCD display that showed "Winblows" when I booted into WinXP and "Linux r0x0r5" if I booted into Linux.

^^ Not my actual idea. Just a slightly humorous way of describing what I am asking.

And it does not have to be a direct detect, it could just be boot0, boot1, boot2, etc.

And if there is a way that requires specific hardware/software, links would be much appreciated.

well.... I think that you can tell each OS which display to use as its primary display and then configure whatever you want to display as your startup screen, but I don't think its possible, or at least easily, to get your hardware to detect your OS. Good luck and sorry I couldnt have been of more help...

Thanks acemcmac.

I am not really looking for a display.... Merely technical knowledge if there is a way to detect (again, externaly) which OS was booted.

Another idea along the same thoughts, but still not the idea I am trying to go with, a way to remotely detect what OS was in use. Without requiring a network attachment.

No.... that doesn't sound quite right..... Lemme just say, I am not trying to hack anyone elses computer. I am just trying to figure out if there is a way to set a switch to respond to a multi-boot box.

Gaaah! I hope I have not made it more confusing....
