Different types of s-video plugs?

I have two svideo (male) to rca composite (female) converters. I think one came with my ati 9500 and the other on a ati 9600 (not sure though). The thing is that the svideo plug is different on each on. On one there are 8 pins only. On the other are 7 pins and a 1/8in long plastic tab. Both fit into my ati 9500 card but I also have an ibm t40 laptop and converters don't fit into the laptop svideo (the laptop has a 4 pin and 1/8in long tab connection). What's up with this?
