Just curious on the different types of CPU's and sizes that are available right now.....

anyone name a few that are both cheap, and effective? I dont need it to do much, but I just need a general feel on prices and power.....

I'll probably look it up later myself but.... any help would be greatly appreciated .....

thanks!

There are a lot of CPUs available right now. It would help to narrow down by OS, and then by what you mean by "power".

In general categories, there are:

  • "Big" x86:
    • Intel Haswell (and Broadwell, but only in laptops) These run the gamut from Celerons to i7s. (There's also socket 2011-3 systems, but those are extremely powerful, power-hungry, and expensive.)
    • AMD FM2 and AM3+ systems
      • Kaveri, an FM2 system with Steamroller cores.
      • There's also older FM2 and AM3+ systems with Piledriver cores.
  • "Small" x86
    • Intel Bay Trail Atom systems. Their naming conventions are confusing. Some (PDF) are even named Celerons and Pentiums!
    • AMD socket AM1 Kabini systems. The lowest-end CPUs that aren't soldered onto motherboards.
    • AMD Beema and Mullins, which don't yet come in a socket AM1 configuration.
  • Non-x86 systems (primarily ARM)
    • Almost every smartphone and tablet in existence, both iOS and Android.
    • Raspberry Pi and similar systems.
