Different Twist on the Home Network problem...

Hi guys,

I'm going to get a cable feed via my company in a few months & I wanted to check on the viability of setting up an internal network with it..

Basically, these are the clients:

1. Work laptop running win2k w/a software firewall. I don't know the particulars of the firewall implementation since it's coming from corporate, but it's definately going to be software and I beleive I'll be using VPN to connect to the office.

(3) 98se machines.

I'm going to be getting a cable feed from adelphia & I understand the basics of the varoius router/switch configurations out there. What complicates things is the software firewall on my work laptop... I figure I have two possible setups:

1. Use the laptop w/the software firewall behind the rs... Can you layer a hardware firewall on top of a software one like this and still have things work? Will a VPN connection work?

2. Get one of the rs's that allows a particular client to be placed "outside" the firewall... is this truely "outside" in that it won't interfere with a vpn connection? Can a machine being placed outside the firewall still be part of the NAT? setup (ie, internal ip's all resolving to the one ip at the rs for the cable connection)?

Thanks!
Alex

If you going to connect only one computer to the cable feed, don?t bother with any hardware solution.

If you want to use more then one computer you will be better off with Cable/DSL Router.

Since you need to set a VPN you should research which Router to get, some Routers has difficulties with VPN settings.

Hardware firewall on top of a software, is not a problem.

I don't really know alot about vpn, but the vpn stuff will be setup on the software firewall on my side - it will have to pass through my hardware rs and connect to the corporate vpn settings... basically, I'm trying to get a free ride with my other machines since the cable service is going to be there anyway...

Thx guys!
