Ok I just got my computer and this will be the first time adding thermal past becuase my other computers didnt need them. Anyway my question is not how to apply it really since theres hardly no wrong way since i understand u can just add a pea size in middle and let the heatsink on top spread it.
Anyway i was undering if theres speacial thermal past to use, I read somewhere that theres this one called silver something. Just wondering if it actually matters. Right now i have a pak of Stars heatsink compond. Now is that anygood? Im just scared becuase i spend alot on this computer and i wanna use the best.
thanks alot for the help

You're thinking of Arctic Silver. That comes in a few flavors, AS5 being the best. Check out http://www.Newegg.com

Anyway, generic paste is fine. Yes, Arctic Silver is better, but only by a degree or two. Nothing major to get worried over.

EDIT: BTW, you may also want to check you local stores if you want to pick up some AS5. I know for sure that CompUSA carries it.

You'll have to ask AT members who live up North about that.

You may try consulting your local phonebook. A few short calls should turn up a lead.

when you are putting on thermal paste, just put on a little bit. you want enough for a thin layer over the core (or heatspreader in the case of a64 or p4), not a thick glob. put it on, then spread it around with a razor blade or credit card so it is thinner than paper.

I use Arctic Silver 5, BTW I dont think the egg stocks it.

Anyway, I keep hearing from those who've tested, the cheap stuff Radio Shack works as good as AS5. Don't sweat it. Just get your rig together. Later when you order a part from somebody who carries, throw in some AS5.

I aint paying $5 shipping for a $5 tube of thermal paste. So I just used the cheap stuff til it was convenient to order some along with other stuff. Then kept it on the shelf til I was upgrading my HS, or got bored and wanted something to do. Thermal paste won't "make or break" the rig.

Artic silver 5 is a very popular product and nearly every computer store has it. Canadacomputers.com has it for 10 dollars. There are 6 locations throughout Ontario. IF you live downtown TO, there's one at college and spadina

I changed from generic silver thermal paste and a Volcano-9 HS/Fan to Arctic Silver 5 and Volcano-11 HS/F and dropped 7C. I can not recommend Arctic Silver 5 enough.
