different speed DDR ram?

im helpin my buddy configure a new computer and he's asking about ram
i heard that there is PC2100 and PC2600 (might be 2700 if my numbers are wrong) but i can only find the PC2100, is there only 1 kind or what?

There are four main kinds of DDR memory available today, each with varying availability. The high end stuff is the least common. Here they are:

PC1600....this is 100hz DDR SDRAM (200Mhz effectively) with a bandwidth of--you guessed it, 1.6GB/s

PC2100...same as the above but running at 133Mhz (266 effectively).

PC2400...the story continues only faster. This stuff runs at 150Mhz (300Mhz effectively) and is harder to find and a bit more expensive.

PC2700...whoopie it's fast! This stuff clocks in at 166Mhz (333Mhz effectively) and is expensive and hard to find!

All the above require a motherboard that can run them. At this point you have to overclock to reach PC2400/2700 rates, but boards out in the next two quarters should fully support PC2700 DDR.

would i have to overclock my FSB to use that 2700 effectively?

it's a hypothetical question, i don't feel like soldering my mobo while there are still 2.5 years warranty left

It will work in any 184-pin DIMM, but to use it effectively you will need to overclock. Otherwise it works just like PC2100. If your current motherboard supports FSB "tweaking" you should be able to make better use of it by overclocking your FSB.
