Hi everyone,
I dont know if this topic was already raised, but I'll put it down anyway. In few short words:
Is there a some kind of a 'flaw' in gf4 Ti cards which cause that they start crashing (So called 'Pink SOD' or 'Pink-Green SOD', as noted on The Inquirer) after days/weeks/months of working w/o any problems (and SODs start w/o any apparent reason)??
Here's my story (and I dont want you to get the feeling that I'm paranoid
):
I beacame happy owner of Gainward gf4 ti4200 64MB (Ultra 650) in July this year. Card was fine (I didnt o/c it) until september when, at odd times, the system started to crash during my war3 sessions (Screen would became totally 'distorted' with purple and green squares all over it, immediately after POST, there would be similar garbage on the screen and I would have to manually turn off the machine, and then turn it on.
As a 'Windows Culture' sheep, at first I thought its a 'pre XPsp1 problem'. Then, as crashing became more frequent, I started messing with drivers (29.XX, 30.82, 40.72, rollback etc etc). Then, I flashed Mobo BIOS, tried messign with all possible and impossible BIOS settings (AGP voltage, AGP Aperture Size etc etc), but the crashing continued. Them I thought it is my PSU, so I bought new PSU (350W Enermax). But, ofcoz, to no avail.
So finally, I decieded to RMA the card. Anyone can be 'unlucky camper' and get a faulty card.
But, just to make sure, I decided to check on the internet if there was something similar to what was happening to me (This is my stupidity, I should have done this AGES ago). To my amazement, seemed like Gaiwards Ti4200s 64MB were crucified.
First, I found this on The Inquirer:
Do Gainward Ti4200 cards make screens go pink?
and
Gainward will fix Pink Screen of Death cards quickly
After checkin thread @ madonion forum (Following The Iquirer link)
Thread here
I have noticed some scary things: 2nd article was written on 5th of Sept 02; at the end of the thread, there are guys who RMAed their Gainwards AFTER Gainward said 'we know what's wrong, everyone will be RMAed', and on 3rd of Nov 02 they are receiving FAULTY RMAed Gainwards (IE, new 'fixed' cards from Gainward which are starting to crash after few days)
Ok, I have decided I'll stay away from Gainward and go with ABit or LeadTek or someone else. No biggie...
But, to my dismay, 1 day after I saw this on forums etc, I got a mail from a friend who is having a MSI gf4 4400. He heard bout my problems, and was asking 'What exactly happens with yer gf4???'. After I explained, we came to conclusion that the same thing is happening to him as well. With a MSI gf4 4400... We went to MSI forums, and found a thread there where guys with 4600 and 4400 are having similar sympthoms.
So, what the heck is this? Cards start to crash, for no apparent reason, days/weeks/months after u buy them. Different models, different brands, similar sympthoms...
I really sound Paranoid(!)
, but maybe you guys know more...
And yeah, maybe this has to do something bout it all:
Dodgy components threaten mobos, modems
Taiwanese component problems may cause mass recalls
Low-ESR Aluminum Electrolytic Failures Linked to Taiwanese Raw Material Problems
Any insight would be great!
For the end, my specs:
P4 1.8A
MSI 845 Ultra-ARU
512MB TwinMOS PC2100
Gainward GF4 Ti4200 64MB
Enermax EG365P-VE 350W
...
