Different Clocked CPUs in a Tiger MP?

I read over at www.tech-report.com that it might be possible to run 2 differently clocked CPU's in a Tyan TigerMP. They claimed that by putting the faster proc in the first slot, the board took the mutliplier from that and clocked up the 2nd cpu!! Is this actually a feasible method? Has anyone tried this before? Is it a godlike way to save money?! Post your profound wisdom down below.

This should only work with AthlonMPs, since they are unlocked - at least people claim they are.

I doubt an XP will let itself be overclocked that way. Actually, I am very sure.

In the section labeled "Running a Duron 1GHz and a Duron 1.1GHz", they talk about how dual Durons were clocked up using that method. So Im wondering if it'll work with da XP's.

That just doesn't make any sense, unless the Durons were unlocked. The 1.0 and 1.1Ghz have different multipliers when locked (10 vs. 11). To my knowledge, you can't up the FSB for only one processor.

Two explanations for you:

1) The 1 Ghz Duron was an engineering sample (factory unlocked), which is very likely. THG confuses readers with this all the time.

2) They simply lie. I see no screenshot saying those two Durons actually ran at 1.1 Ghz

I hope it's 1)

And, no, I don't think you can do this with regular XPs at home.

Are unlocked Durons really that common?

Other than engineering samples, I'm not aware of any Duron chip coming unlocked. In the past, T-birds 1.2Ghz and up were factory unlocked...Durons, never. It takes about 45 seconds with a sharp #2 pencil to fix that though. :)

I would recommend against thinking you would be able to run different processor speeds.

I have a Tyan Tiger MP (s2460), which originally ran in uni-processor mode with an Athlon 1500 MP. I finally got the money and ordered a 1500 XP from an online retailer. They "upgraded" me to a 1600 XP because they didn't have any more 1500s. When I tried to run the 1500 and 1600 together the board told me there was a speed mismatch and it would only run in uni-processor mode. I tried downgrading the bios to the oldest version possible, still didn't work. (I believe all the reviewers must have been using dev boards with very early bioses.)
Luckily, I was able to trade my Athlon 1500 MP for an Athlon 1600 XP from one of my friends at school. The boards cannot tell the difference between XPs and MPs. Now it runs perfectly at 2 x 1600 XP )
BTW, My friend was able to over clock the 1500 MP (1.3GHz) to 1.6 GHz very easily and he's not using water-cooling. He thinks that with water cooling 1.8 GHz is possible.
