Different clock speeds for CPU and RAM?

I am wondering, if I have PC2100 DDR RAM, but want to upgrade my system to use a Barton 2500+ (runs on a 333 FSB), can I have the RAM still running at 266 and the CPU at 333? I currently have an XP 1800+ which runs at 266 just like the RAM. I believe my MSI KT3 Ultra2 mobo can support this, but I wanted to check with other users. Thanks!

Theres more benefit by running your RAM and CPU at the same speeds then at different ones. If you run them out of sync youll create more latency which will do nothing good for your speeds, even if it appears it should do with your CPU running at a higher speed. 🙂

heh

2.60ghz 200fsb (800) / 200mhz (400) ram = slow as crap
3.11ghz 239fsb (957) / 191mhz (382) ram = fast as crap

i love running out of sync 😀

239 fsb. memory @ 239 mhz faster 🙂

I just couldn't pass up the Best Buy price on the Crucial PC2100 dimms right now. I know that I would be better of with the PC2700, but I am hoping I won't notice too much of a speed impact.

Well, I can't get my MSI KT3 Ultra2 with the Barton 2500+ and PC2100 Crucial DDR ram to run all at 166 FSB. 133 runs stable of course, but only reports as a XP1800+. Anyone have advice on how to set this in the BIOS? Or am I forced to get PC2700 ram?

Well, it is sounding like I need to get some PC2700 ram. What brand would be best for me to get (optimal price/performace tradeoff)?
