I know the simple answer is "Yes, it's best to have identical drives for a RAID setup", but are there real problems that are likely to come up mixing drives on a RAID system so long as they have roughly the same stats - rpm, # of platters, seek time, ATA?

I've been running a Seagate Barracuda IV (40 gig, 7200 RPM 2Mcache) in a striping RAID with a Maxtor (40gig, 7200RPM 2Mcache) without problems. It isn't recommended, but as long as the drives are similar, you shouldn't have any compatability problems at least.

For reference, my RAID array scores within 5 marks of Sisoft Sandra's ATA RAID standard for 60G 7200RPM 2M drives.
