Different Birds Will Eat Together

Many sizes and species from Finches to Cardinals to Woodpeckers and Bluebirds will gather at the feeder. They don't even mind if a rabbit or raccoon joins in to pick up what they drop.

But let a human open a door nearby and they all scatter.

actually, cardinals drive away other birds so as to get all the seeds for themselves.

Not the seagull. Those damn birds are loners.

Some guy was feeding seagulls cheetos. There must had been about 100 seagulls all squawking and dive bombing on other people's food.

you're supposed to feed seagulls alka-seltzer.... :p

I can have a dozen birds of several different species at the feeder...till the stellar jays show up...they run them all off...the try to tip the feeder so it will spill on the ground. (Doesn't work with this feeder.)

My wife is an avid gardener. The bright colors of the flowers attract a lot of birds to begin with. Finches like thistle, hummingbirds show up, lots of bees.... She started putting out feeders and we constantly see downy woodpeckers, red belly woodpeckers, house finches, gold finches, blue birds, mocking birds, blue jays, titmouses (or would that be titmice?), a number of others I can't think of. It's interesting to see so much wildlife in our yard and all the neighbors have empty grass....just a few hundred feet away.

Yes I've seen squirrels with the different birds at our bird bath. Animals trust each other more than humans to a certain extent. Blue Jays are kind of nasty though.

With nature, it's all about what's 'common' to the wild animals. If you're not always in the yard or making the same noises, they're going to fly off and come back when they think it's safe. If you're outside hammering all the time even, over time...they may grow less aware of the noise and not feel threatened.

I agree but what I was thinking of is that we have a female cat that had a litter before we got her fixed. She is an inside/outside cat and had them outside. We still have two males, and you cannot pet them. They trust us and you can get close; one prefers to come inside to eat. But we have a dog and they are fine with him. They are just as used to us and the dog so what's up?

Cats don't count. Some just don't like attention and aren't social. Gallagher always talked about cats...you can buy the most expensive cat food in the market and the cat will just look at it, then hike its leg up and lick its own butt.

but blue jays are worse. And I've noticed woodpeckers terrorizing everything--I think mainly due to their size, and the evil-looking lance sticking out of their faces.

Cat birds are aggressive....and blue jays will drive the cat birds off. What's really cool is how you always see birds in pairs. I saw 4 pairs of blue jays fly into a tree in my back yard, 2 at a time....this cat bird ducked down to shrub level behind my house until they left. I hate cat birds...I never knew what they were until this year, but always hated hearing their annoying call. If I lived further away from neighbors, I'd invest in a pellet rifle.

I used to have a house in our northern end of the city and fed the birds in the winter. There were a good number of birds but the cardinals were the more pushy of the bunch. I used to watch the chickadees and sparrows feeding. Rarely was there a bluejay. I saw starlings, too. We got the odd woodpecker, mostly downy and hairy.
