Windows NT = Version 3.5/4, Windows 2000 = Version 5, Windows XP = 5.1

Xp supports things like USB which NT didn't

Basically, what Schadenfroh said.

When people say Windows NT do they consider Windows 2000 as part of the NT family?

Most mean NT 4 or earlier, but they either don't know what they're talking about or they're referring to the OSes by brand name and not version.

...yet it has none of the 95/98 features. Therefore, it's more of a severe branch in the two different OS paths.

Windows NT is basically a much older version of Windows XP. Windows NT is in NO WAY nearly realted to Windows 95/98/ME. Windows 2000 and Windows XP are essentially the next versions of Windows NT, but with a different brand name? Windows 2000 is basically Windows NT 5.0 and Windows XP is basically Windows NT 5.1. Am I right on that?

Yes.
The NT line of OS started with NT3.5 and 3.51 IIRC.

About 3 years and a lot of hardware friendliness added. :)

I was having problem installing NT. It would go into setup again and again and again.
So, I installed 98SE and upgraded it to NT. so now i got me an NT system.

But NT was the first Windows with Freecell included.
