Different audio decoder settings

I'm not very good at any of this audio setup stuff and have always wondered what's the point of this. Shouldn't it be set to straight all the time to allow the source device to decode? Can any explain the details?

if you're talking about decoding from digital encoding like dolby digital/dts, it pretty much doesn't matter that much where the decoding happens.

one device may have better/worse DACs than another, but in practice most people won't be able to tell a difference.

i personally like to have my receiver handle all decoding, because i like pretty lights and it lights up when it is doing the dolby/dts decoding :)
