whats the major diff between the ac 97 sound and something like the c-media or creative? when would you hear the differences? would it be that much a diff?

Ohh yeah, extremely. Those AC 97 codec's are horrible, well that's a bit harsh. It's useful for everyday stuff. The C-Media and Creative Sound Blaster (compatible) are cool. I believe they can support up to 4.1 speakers A good example is The Soyo Dragon+ that is good and is 5.1 compatible encoder. But the BEST integrated sound is the N-Force APU (Audio Processing Unit) 5.1 real time decoding. But in the end it depends on what speakers you got? The 10$ cheapo speakers AC97 is suitable. But if you got satellite speakers and a Subwoofer look for a Creative or Dolby compatible(its a good investment).
