Differences in 4mm DAT tapes?

I think my drive is a DDS-4 20/40GB. Need tapes, but only need max of 4GB. Can I get smaller capacity tapes or are they incompatible? There's 2/4, 4/8, 12/24, 20/40, and 36/72. I see references to DDS-2 and DDS-3.

The tape drive you have likely CANNOT write earlier DDS versions, check the manual. The $$ difference between DDS-1 & DDS-4 tapes is like $3.
