This is continuation of this thread.. I'm looking at HDTVs right now and noticed that 34" CRT HDTV runs around $1250, while 46" projection HDTV monitor costs $1300. Obviously I'd rather have a 46" HDTV, but I realize there must be a catch. So what are the disadvantages of projection TVs?

In this age of HT the picture on a CRT simply can't be matched, period, but their size is limited. RPs have issues with viewing angle, brightness, and the dreaded burn in.

CRT's provide the best picture of all technologies, but the size is capped at about 38 to 40 inches.

There are fans in either category. Some people think being big is better than anything else. To me, quality is also quite important. In my personal opinion, projection TVs are lightyears behind CRTs in quality. So the answer is obvious to get the CRT. Others will disagree, and they are welcome to get their projection TVs.

Just watch both in a store and come up with your own decision.

Actually in the store projection TV looked much better. But it was the only one getting HD feed, while everything else was getting regular feed :)

It did look pretty heavy though.

I'm looking for something in the 50's myself, nothing like HD on a larger screen, it really shows it off great.

If you like it, then buy it. But first, for $1300 don't you think the store will let you send the same HD feed to both?

saw some real nice DLP projection tv's at CES. They're just as good if not better than a lot of CRT's

Direct View sets which is the type of TV we're all used to is expensive because of the tube. CRT based rear projection TV's use 3 CRT's that are bounced off a mirror and projected onto a screen.

Direct View TV's don't come larger than 40" (it may actually be 38") but the pictures are generally very good and they have excellent light output and contrast levels.

CRT based RPTV's can have very good pictures but have a narrow viewing angle and are not always good in rooms with poor light control. A lot of them have protective screens that tend to glare. They also take up a lot of room compared to the newer fixed pixel TV's (LCD, DLP, Plasma).

I have a CRT based HDTV and I love it. If I had to buy another TV today I might look at DLP but I don't like LCD or Plasma. All of the newer technologies are getting better every year but they're not good enough for *me* yet.

36" is the biggest we kept stocks of in Circuit City. They are very, very heavy, easily 2-3 hundred pounds for a TV of that size. We had a 40" in our warehouse once, it was a ridiculous monster. I'm glad I didn't have to deal with too many of those.

Projection TVs don't suck, it depends how much you are willing to spend on not only quality hardware, but good lighting control for the room. I'd take front projection over rear projection anyday, but there have been some really good rear projection TVs put out lately, take the DLP and LCoS technology for example.

don't worry, it was meant as a compliment-from what I've read from your posts you actually know what you're talking about, and I respect that.
