Differences between DVD-R and DVD+R ?

I've read a short list of the different types of DVD media out there. I know that DVD-RAM is the most feature-rich (but what the features are, who knows), and that DVD-5 is 4.7GB, and DVD-10 is the double sided 9.4GB discs.

But what exactly is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R? The only one I know of is that DVD-R is more highly compatible with home DVD players. I see all these DVD+/-RW drives out there.. why would someone want -R and +R in one drive? Is there any scenario where someone would choose +R over -R?

I got a +/- drive because I'm not sure which standard will stay and which will die. It doesn't seem like any one standard will die out, they all have major backers to them. Having a +/- drive just future proofs yourself just in case they stop making media of one type. It also lets me choose whatever media is available, in case one time one is cheaper than the other or vice versa.

I also got a DVD+/-RW to ensure compatiblity with the discs I burn. I've seen these dual burners for as cheap as $130 retail now. Great price.

On another note, I've never tried it, but has anyone had success with playing DVD+/-RW discs in commercial decks?

DVD+RW seems to be technologically superior with the way the burns are done (long article on that). They also got to 8x first. But again, compatibility is in the high 80s whereas the DVD-RW is in the mid 90s. DVD+RW compatibility
