Apparently I'm totally clueless - anyone have a good place to read up on the difference between the seemingly infinite number of Intel chipsets that are floating around?
I was kinda hoping for something a little less formal, though. Something with just a basic breakdown of all the various chipsets and their respective features.
Oh and whilst the list defines the base settings, the board manufacturers have lots of leeway in how they set things up.
Case in point: P35 - specs cite 2 PCIe slots at x16 and x4 but ASUS has made a Blitz p35 board that has x8 x8 (like the 975 chipset).
Same with memory in that the manufacturers choose to market DDR2 /DDR3 in various combos according to what they think will sell.
So the new x38 chipset motherboards will have DDR2 versions as the manufacturers don't want to niche themselves too much by just doing DDR3 versions.
