Differences between 5.1/6.1/7.1 speakers

Hi guys, I am considering upgrading my sound system (am still using outdated 2.1 speakers). However, what I am wondering is, is there a big difference between 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1? I mean, at the end of the day, the all just provide surround sound right?

If I do decide to go for either 6.1 or 7.1, I will have to get a new sound card as my current one will only support 5.1. Any opinions r very much appreciated.

I would personally rather have 6 high quality speakers than 8 crappy ones. If money is no object (it rarely is) then might as well go all out and build a nice 7.1 system.

For home theater and PC games, 5.1 is all you really need. There are very few 6.1 discreet sound tracks and non that are 7.1 discreet (AFAIK).

Any good brands that I should go for? Been having my eye on Altec Lansing 5100, seems quite decent and not to overly priced (since cost is a slight issue -- rather not spend too much money for very little returns). Any other good speakers that I should look out for?

I'm much more familiar with home theater speakers. I don't spend much money on PC speakers.
