differences 800GTO vs 1600PRO

Short notes: currently have older AGP board with 7000 card, and 1 gig ram. Machine used alot for gaming (Roman, X2, Diablo, ect.); current v card is failing and I need to upgrade. Budget is in the 150 - 175 range. As for upgrading to PCI, i'm already building another system utilizing PCI, but the current system will still be used along with new system.

I've been watching the forums and seeing which cards appear the best for my use. When i look at the 800 and 1600, I'm not sure of the difference or which is the better card?

So, what are the words of wisdom or experience? Thanks.

X800GTO will be faster most all situations, the only issue is that is doesn't support SM3.0 like the X1xxx series do, probably a few other things though aswell. I own both of the cards in question with identical configurations other than that, and the X800GTO machine is down right faster with current games.

thanks. the machine i'm building will have a better v card, but for this existing system i just need a good stable card, not cutting edge.

go for the X800GTO if you don't mind all the better visual effects....but anyways, the X1600PRO will be pretty slow if all the SM3.0 effects on so might just go with the X800GTO.
