I want to create a full backup of my harddrive in case it ever fysically dies and I have to replace it with a new one and then be able to do a full restore from that backup so I don't need to re-install all my programs and settings. Now how can I do this on a USB drive?

Is it enough to create a recovery drive in windows 10 or do I also need to create a system image file on that usb to do a full re-install on a new harddisk?

Plug a usb stick in, go to control panel>back up and restore>make system image. Follow the prompts.
This will give an image of the drive . Make sure to create are store disk on a cd.

Be aware that an image is a one time picture of you compute. Save a file, add a program, remove a program, change a setting, etc, and you have to re-image. Also, It's likely the key for your Windows won't work when you image to a new computer.

Isn't it so i also need a recovery drive to boot from if i want to install the iso on a new hdd? Can I put the image files on the same usb drive that has the boot data?
