Difference in network cables?

I have a cable modem hooked up to my computer via a USB cable, but am going back to ethernet cable. I used to have 2 computers hooked together with a Linksys Network in a box hub with two cables. When I went to install the nic and to use one of the cables to hook the cablemodem to the nic, the modem does not work. I thought I heard before that cables can be a different type. What kind of cable do I need from the modem to the nic card?
TIA

To hook the cable modem directly to the NIC you should just need the standard straight through Ethernet cable (not a crossover cable).

Another reason that might be causing you problems is authentication. With my cable provider, they need the MAC address from the NIC that is connecting to their network. This will prevent someone else from gaining access to their network, unless of course they have the same MAC address (which is possible since some cards and routers allow you to specify a MAC address).

Thanks.
I did need a "Push" as the RR tech called it to initialize the new NIC with the MAC address.
I just wish I could get rid of this lag in Everquest. I can't understand how I can get such horrible lag/Packet loss with RR. When I had RR before in Hawaii, I never had this kind of problem. I'm starting to think it's Time Warner.
