Thanks a lot!

alright, i'll bite.

a dual format dvd burner burns in both dvd + R/RW, and dvd - R/RW.

the + and - are the formats the "dual format" refers to.

it's just that simple.

+'s are generally more expensive, thus, the drive is cheaper. -'s arent compatible with everything. thus, the media is cheaper. get a dual format, and have the best of both worlds.

xboxes, if i'm not mistaken, will only read dvd +R. my dvd player downstairs (denon 2900) will read anything.

simple stuff like that.

I think i read somewhere that -'s has higher compatability than +'s

In simple terms, the difference is that dual format burners can burn more than one format (usually +RW and -RW). Sometimes more than that by including -RAM as well. For all practical purposes, from most reviews and articles I have read, compatability betweem -R and +R is about the same. Nearly all new set top players will support both formats with equal ease. There are, of course, exceptions. My one year old player is only compatabile with DVD-R, but I knew that when I bought my burner (which is dual-format). Other devices (like your PS2, etc) may be more picky about which format it will read.
