Difference between virtual server and firewall

I am confused about the difference between virtual server and firewall in the advanced features section of my D-Link DI-604 router.

I am trying to set up bittorrent. I have a good connection, fast speeds, a green light etc. But I can't seem to get a good upload connection. Sometime's bittornado will start to upload 80k/s, and then a few minutes later it drops to 3 k/s. I pull up the advanced box to see the connections and there's plenty of people but I am not connecting to them...or I am getting a very slow connection all of a sudden. Sometimes i'll connect to someone at 60k/s for example and a few seconds later the speed drops to 5k/s for example. It's real weird.

Obviously I am getting through okay with a green light and good download speeds. I only have the firewall section on my router configured to the ports open for my bittorrent connection (a range of 10 ports 60xxx-60xxx).

I tried setting up the virtual server as well. No difference.

Virtual Server:
Name: Bittorrent
Private IP: 192.168.0.100 (I am assuming they want the private LAN ip, not the actual ip address of my pc)
Protocol Type:TCP
Private Port: 6xxxx (I just put the first port in the port range here)
Public Port: 6xxxx (same as private port)

I am not really sure what is supposed to go in the private/public ports???

Interestingly, D-Link use to have a tutorial on setting up bittorrent....they instructed to configure the firewall options.

Now they have a different tutorial. It's something completely different
http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1347

I tried it and still no difference.

I need some expert advice on what I need to configure and how I need to configure it to make my bt work properly.

My bt client has been configured with the 6xxxx-6xxxx range. As I said, I am getting a green light and good download speeds.

I've been using the DI-604 (REV E) for Bittorrent for 1-2 years now with no problems until yesterday. For some reason my Shadow bittorrent client is starting to report my bittorrents as firewalled (yellow icon). Speeds seem ok.

I've updated the firmware to the latest and reentered all my router settings (applications and firewall). Any suggestions?

For the original poster, please note that you should be entering that information in the Applications, and not the Virtual Server, tab-look at the FAQ you linked. Also, not mentioned in the FAQ is the necessity of opening a hole in the firewall for bittorrent-basically mirror what you did in the Application tab.

Disclaimer-no expert, just a bumbling amateur.

blackrain:

I did a google search and turned up this page which is excellent:

DI-604 and bittorrent

Under your browser, do a Find search for 604 and you will turn up a couple of excellent posts. It turns out that somehow my bittorrent client settings had changed, and the router settings were ok for me.
