Difference between Ultra - nonUltra and Pro - nonpro cards

Does anyone have details on Nvidias FX5900 Ultra and nonUltra? because nvidia seems reluctant to share that info on their homepage. Same thing goes for ATi Radeon9700-9800 Pro and nonPro cards. just some general info comparing mem. freq. and core freq. will do but if anyone has some nice benchmarks that would be greatly appreciated

Is it only the clock speeds that are different in the two versions? The price difference seems substantial:Q. If only clock speed is different then shouldn't we buy the Non ultr/Pro version and simply overclock it?

That is what many people do.

That is what many people do.

The problem is that the Pro/ultra will overclock further. In fact the non-pro/ultra usually have worse memory chips that won't let you overclock too much.

Yes but is the difference extreme or just marginal? i've not seen a single page that simply tells the exact Core and Mem. freq. between a pro and a nonPro card but due to the very large pricedifference between those two i guess it is quite huge. But some hard numbers would be nice if someone out there have them.

Although, many people here seem to frown on THG...why is that?

You can see though that there isn't much difference in performance between the FX5900 and FX5900 Ultra. They are both very close to the ATI 9800 Pro also. I haven't seen a 9800 non-pro anywhere. Do they even exist?

On the 5900 I believe the only difference is the ammount of memory, 128MB vs 256MB, not sure how much a difference 256MB actually makes though. On other Nvidia cards, it's clock speeds, which you can almost always make up with overclocking. On ATI cards it's generally only clock speeds, the only problem with overclocking is on those is that for whatever they've been putting locks for overclocking on some of their cards, so you'd have to flash a new bios to the card which can be a bit of a pain.

the THG link you posted Jules was just what i needed. I've seen that guide lots of times but never bothered to look closer, but why the hell did they leave out the Radeon9700pro and nonpro?

They had the 9700 Pro results included in the benchmark testing. As for the non pro? I have no idea.

The 5600/5900 Ultras also require a seperate power connection, the non-ultras do not.
