Are there huge differences between these two dell 24" monitors?

i think the ultrasharp has the ability to swivel/adjust + usb ports.

what else is there?

The major drawback of TNs is their viewing angles, which are quite limited and you have to position yourself in front of the monitor in order to not see color and contrast shifting. Other than that there's the colors which are most often 6-bit on TNs and 8-bit on *VAs and IPS ... To display the additional 2 bits of color, 6-bit displays most often use dithering and FRC which are spatial and temporal algorithms that simulate the missing color. You can read more in The LCD thread

I myself own a Samsung 245BW and personally think it looks gorgeous and the IQ is excellent - very sharp with vivid colors (the same panel is used in the Dell E248WFP) and can recommend it to you. Of course it's better to purchase a *VA or IPS based display if you have the money, but if you're on a budget, the Sammy is worth the money imo.

I think TN technology is quite mature now and viewing angles and color fidelity is becoming lesser of an issue with every new panel they make.

I don't know the difference, by my 2407-HC has developed ghosting problems recently.

Newer TN panels are better than the older ones, and the price for the E248WFP is great. If you don't mind the loss of color accuracy compared to PVA and IPS panels it would make a great gaming monitor. Keep the 1920x1200 resolution in mind too, it requires a heftier graphics card than 1650x1080.

If you want a gaming monitor, you might be better off with 22"; if you want a monitor for graphics work, you'll want one with a PVA, MVA, or IPS panel. The Apple Cinema Display has an IPS panel and is great for photo/graphics work and video, but it's ~$800.

There is also a Dell 2408 coming out soon, which will hopefully not have any of the ghosting problems of the 2407WFP-HC that some people are experiencing.

http://www.dell.com/content/pr...fp?c=us&l=en&s=dfo#tn2

There are many variables with LCD monitors besides just the color accuracy and response times, and manufacturers make it worse by actively deceiving customers through phony specs (Samsung's "dynamic contrast" ploy), or through Dell's panel lottery, or shipping monitors with various other defects (input lag, ghosting, poor color accuracy, poor resolution scaling, connectors failing, etc). So whatever monitor you intend to buy, do the research on it, because it may not be all that the advertizing claims.

The Ultrasharp has lots of amenities like additional inputs, s-video/composite/component, that lets it double as a TV. Like mentioned before, Ultrasharp will have better viewing angles and colors, but for gaming, I think the E248WFP will have better response times.

thanks guys, i was really aiming only at the E248WFP for the 389 Price which is right at my budget. How bad are the viewing angles, asuming i'm sitting directly in front of it, will the picture look 99% the same as the ultrasharp? what if i had a friend stand right next to me (standing so he's viewing the monitor from a higher, tilted angle to the right, for example?)

50% of the usage will be for desktop 2D usage, 40% will be used for CS:S, and 10% will be for movies watching from directly in front (maybe 5 feet away)

Is the "E" in E248WFP for Economy?

louisss why do you blow all your money on your computer? Don't you care about getting out of your basement and eating more than pizza pops? It seems all you do is upgrade your rig every 3 months

Upgrading can be very fun, but now that I've got a top of the line computer I could care less. Go figure.

I think I want to get into car modding.

Do people make stupid comments about living in your basement and blowing all your money on your car? No, people think it's cool and you get all the babes.

Priorities, and someone decided that having a modding hobby which costs thousands upon thousands of dollars is cooler than a hobby which just costs hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

There will always be the anonymous naysayers who can't just be happy that people are happing upgrading their rig/car/house/epeen.

Louis, you should also consider the BenQ G2400W which is at the same $390 + ship price point. It is also a TN panel, but apparently has little to no input lag based on comments at other forum sites, and excellent color & contrast for a TN. Reviews on Newegg are also generally positive (take that with a grain of salt though...lots of noobs there).

I'm looking for a reasonably affordable (??) IPS panel but am keeping this same BenQ in mind if I can't come up with the cash before I grow old.

yea i like that the Benq has the HDMI input, but i probably won't have a use for that. + i've always wanted a slick looking dell monitor, they look sleek yet professional

on another note, i dunno if i'm ready to give up my 20.1in+17in dual monitor setup for a single 24in... would u guys do it?

with your setup I could see viable gaming but 1920x1200 is still more demanding than your current setup.
if you're really looking to keep your FPS/Eyecandy I'd highly recommend you sit with your current setup. 1920x1200 can get taxing.
I have a 27" Samsung I sized down from 30" Apple I had for 2 years and it still taxes my 2 8800 GTXs.

I mean, the choice is your sthough.

Forget car modding. Computers, boobs, and a job that makes it possible to get both are all you need.
