They are different steppings. E4 is newer than E3.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the exact differences between the steppings.

I think there was also an E6 out there... search by my username, I had an E3 3500+ and an E4 or E6 at the same time for awhile. I found the E3 the better CPU. Whichever newer stepping I had would not allow me to set 1T command rate in the BIOS of the computer I put it in, but I'd previously had 1T using the E3 3500+.

The mobo that allowed 1T with E3 3500+ but not E4 was an MSI Neo4 Platinum nforce4 ultra.

So you're saying E3 is better? I'm probably gonna buy buying a 3500 in 2-3 weeks, so it would be nice to know. Thanks!

Well E3 ones usually overclocked better than the E6 ones. I donno if they are better than the E4 ones though.

I had a e6 3200+ and it wasn't all that great. Only did 2.7ghz and had to be 1.52v.
