Difference between the VIA's IDE Miniport versus the default VxD? Has something to do with SB and DMA prob

When you install the Via 4in1, the IDE driver installed is the VxD version (you can tell if you manually install the IDE driver without the 4in1 from Via). This VxD one keeps crashing my machine when I try to enable DMA on my CD/DVD. But if I uninstall that and install the same Miniport version, everything is peachy. Anyone know the difference? Is there a performance difference?!

Last time I used the miniport version of those drivers, CPU usage shot up to around 16% or so when Windows made HD accesses (this is compared to around 4.2% CPU usage I get using VxD drivers)
