difference between suntan and sunscreen lotion?

is there a difference between the two? do you need to have suntan lotion to get a tan? i don't see why you wouldn't get a tan if you were in the sun and were just using sunscreen for protection from the sun.

suntan lotion helps get a tan.. normally contains oils and reacts to the sun for a more bronzed tan.. sunscreen.. is what it is... its a screen for the sun.. like sunblock.
