Difference between sli and sli x16?

So is there going to be a performance gain from going from an nforce4 sli mobo to an nforce4 sli x16 mobo? Given that I would use SLI, what kind of gains are expected? I've searched for tests done by people, but haven't had any luck finding any info. Do video cards utilize the full bandwidth offered by pci-e?
 
No gains should be expected, please don't upgrade to that mobo, it's not worth it. Current Video Cards have trouble breaking past x4, let alone x16....

Now if I were to start a new build, would it be worth going with the x16? Or should I not bother with it at all?
