difference between rj45 /cross over/ cat5

i just need ti put 2 pc together in a network

What? You just want to connect the NIC of one PC to the NIC of another PC? Then you need a crossover cable.

Cat5 = The wire you use in networking.

RJ45= The connectors that go on the end of Cat5

Crossover cable= A Cat5 cable that is used for linking 2 computers with no hub. (same stuff just a different wiring in the connector)


It sounds like all you need is to NIC cards (network cards) and a crossover cable. You can buy all these at your local computer store or online.
If you want more than 2 computers in the network then you will have to change the crossover cable to a regular pinned cable and add a hub of some sort.

CAT5, to be specific, it's the cable type referring to 4 twisted pair (8 wires) meant for data
RJ45, refers to the interconnects, 8 "pin" connection, like rj11 refers to our telephone connection
crossover, refers to a type of patch cable where some of the wires are crossed permitting a direct connection between 2 computers, or 2 hubs without an uplink port
patch cable, just a regular cable with plugs on both ends
