Difference between reset button and power button

Does the reset button send an instruction to the CPU that makes it start the computer at address 0x000000000 or does it cut the power from the machine
momentarily? I am guessing the power switch does just that (disconnects the motherboard from a power source). I've had problems where resetting wouldn't get the computer to boot, but powering down and powering on would work.

If you have an atx system then the power switch and reset switch are the same type of "momentary" switch, I guess you are talking about the function of the pins on the motherboard, that I cant answer.

The difference is probably in the circuitry of the power supply.

If they're both momentary switches, the difference would have to be there.

Search either this forum or Highly Technical - there was a surprisingly long thread concerning the various power interruptions about a month or two ago.

cleverhandle - I tried searching before I posted but could not find anything related to my question... maybe my keyword choices suck.

Hmm... I can't seem to find anything now either. Maybe it was an older thread than I thought. Anyway, didn't mean to sound snippy or anything - I just figured no one would think to search on such an offbeat topic, and wanted to point you toward the thread.

Hehe, I didn't think you were snippy or anything... I wa hopinh you had some better keywords than I... I must work on my Search-Fu I guess. Do you remember who posted it? That will make it easier to search for.
