What is the difference(s) between Windows XP Pro upgrade and upgrade academic? Is there like a watermark or something in the academic version? Does the crc match from the academic and regular? Or is it just exactly the same files aside from the packaging label.

I think the difference is that it is priced differently - usually XP PRO Academic is about $99. Lighter on students' wallets :) I have academic and I have seen no difference between it and the "regular" version. So, if you're a student/affiliated with a school then get the academic version.

It's the same, just the academic is cheaper. I have an academic version and the CD is just stamped ACADEMIC on it. The regular PRO and academic CD have the same things other than that stamp on it. Hope this helps.

So, i guess there is also no difference on how they generate their product key, right?

No, but why would that matter?

Same thing I was wondering...

What I meant is when the next os comes out (maybe they call it windows pp :) ) you will have to purchase the full version instead of buying an upgrade version.

Then academic version does not entitle you to upgrades. The license is only good for as long as you are attending the school you aquired it from. If you graduate from that school, you are granted a perpetual license that is good forever. Pricing all depends on your school. Some schools add the price to student fees and then you just have to buy the media for cheap like $10 or so. Some schools charge more instead of assessing it to everyone. Some schools have no student licensing agreement with Microsoft.

They're the same thing. I have a student license, cost me $30. I didn't get a box, just a sleeve with the reg key on it, but otherwise it's the same as XP Pro in any store. It's only legal as long as I'm a student...or something like that.

So what i'm getting here is that when you finished school, according to the eula, are you suppose to buy the regular version?
