difference between mmc and SD memory cards?

Always wondered myself. I know SD stuff can usually take MMC, but not the other way around.

Same form factor, one (I think SD, "secure") has extra "features." I believe the root cause for the 2 formats was licensing, not any real technological difference. I think relatively new devices treat them interchangeably, but read your specific manual.

none of my devices take them interchangeably. it takes either one or the either.

I checked my device manuals:
  • Philips Rush SA230 MP3 player: online ads, Philips product brief, Philips manual all refer to SD/MMC. Requires proprietary formatting for the device to read, the card is still readable in other devices. Only used SD.
  • Dell Axim X3i PDA: online ads, reviews say SD/MMC; Dell manual only refers to SD. Only used SD.
  • Cheap USB card reader has a SD/MMC slot.
