Hello everyone, I am hoping someone here can tell me what is the difference between Information Theory, Information Science, and Information Systems. Any input is appreciated.

I could make educated guesses but I don't think that that'll help you, and welcome to the forums.

umm, information theory isn't at all related to Information Systems for the most part.

information theory is essentially the transmission of information, which is a subset of probability theory. Information Systems are more of computers and things such as that. Never been able to quantify 'information science'

Information Theory: A speculative categorization/organization of the information industry.
Information Science: The study of solutions developed via Information Theory.
Information Systems: How stuff really works.

Information science: not everything is technical, it has some library science stuff in it, more human-oriented.

Information systems: most of it is technical stuff.

the difference: doesn't really matter - you'll still end up unemployed because of the economy...

huh? as beer indicated, information theory is basically math/statistics. here is a short course i found on google, you can look at the syllabus for more info:

maybe where you are!

KC is still not recovering - every time jobs start opening up, sprint cans a few thousand more people and the recovery process has to start all over again.

/the sad thing is that i'm not joking - they seriously do this about once a month.

I've heard the exact same thing from an instructor of a cert class I recently attended. That doesn't sound like an economy issue though - that is a corporate infrastructure issue. Blame it on Sprint; they're saturating your area.

I still remember this from college. Here's an example:

An Information Theorist says "Hey! I discovered infra-red lasers can carry gigantic amounts of information! I bet a device could be created that beams information from one device to another with nearly unlimited bandwidth!"

An Information Scientist says "Hey! Using this device we created, we can cheaply mass produce an infra-red information beaming device! Let's sell the design to a manufacturer!"

An Information Systems guy says "*sigh* I have all these devices I have to install on executive's laptops and then I need to make sure they're all working! I need a vacation!"

That help? :)

good point. i didn't mean to blame the economy, rather just comment that the local economy is crap.

oh well, at least i'm working right now....for the moment....(sigh)

Thanks everyone, I think I have a good idea about what is the difference between the 3 of them.
