Difference between IEEE1284 and non-IEEE 1284 cable on IEEE1284 printer ?

Hi, all

my canon bjc3000 spec says it requires IEEE1284 printer cable. I hook it up with a non-IEEE 1284 cable...
it works ok....

Belkin claim that the IEEE is 10x faster than the non-IEEE
one. Is that true ?

and why is the IEEE-1284 is so xxxxing expensive ?
get my Belkin non-1284 for a few bugs while the 1284 one
cost around $15 ?

thanks

IEEE 1284 cables allow for bi-directional data transfer on the parralel port; which allows for things such as the printer being able to talk to your computer so it can do things like report the status and whatnot if it wanted. And yes, IEEE 1284 cables will see an improvment in the speed if: the parralel port is set to ECP (or at least EPP) mode, the printer supports these modes. I believe IEEE 1284 cables can be longer than other parralel port cables. The printer may function but you also may be missing out on some features the printer has.
