Difference between IBM 75gxp and 60gxp?

The 75GXP has 15GB platters and the 60GXP has 20GB platters. That's why the 75GXP had a 45GB model (3 platters) and the 60GXP has a 40GB model (2 platters).

I think some of the issue with those drives is country of manufacture. Seems a lot of the problems are with drives made in Hungary? Who the hell manufactures in Hungary(cept IBM)? A lot of them drives turned out to be Yugo's

I have a 15GB made in Philippines, it has been running well over a year now.

My current 30 gb 75gxp (dunno where from) has been running fine for 3/4 a year now. I love it lots
But my second question still stands. Is it pretty much the same thing at 30gb?

I don't believe the 60gxp comes in 30gb version. You can get a 20 or 40gb, hence the 20gb per platter.
The 75gxp is 15gb per platter. That's why you will see it in 15, 30, and 45gb versions.

I replaced my 75gxp's with 60gxp's and I love em. Very, very quiet and they run a lot cooler.

Go to storagereview.com and do a comparison between them in the database. You'll see better transfer rates and lower seek times with the 60gxp

Excuse me? I didn't say there was anything wrong with the people or the country of Hungary. Obviously IBM has clean room issues. Other countries such as Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, China, Malaysia, all have well established facilities and protocol. That isn't to say they don't sometimes produce lemons.

I'm still running two 30GB 75GXP drives in RAID-0. I have been since last September (10 and 1/2 months ago). No failures at all. They are very good drives. The 45GB 75GXP drive is questionable though. The 45GB model is prone to failure. At this point in time I would choose the 40GB 60GXP. I don't even know why IBM makes a 30GB 60GXP. What do they do, use half a platter?

Yep, for the 30GB 60GXP they put two platters in the drive, and use the surface area of 1.5 platters.

I would go with the 60GXP model, and obviously I have! They are based on the newer 20Gb platter technology, and they run cooler. Not to mention they are a hell of a lot quieter than the Maxtor I had previously.
