Difference between high and low end switches?

Is there a speed differnce (latency) between high and low end network switches? At home I have a Linksys 10/100 switch running at 100Mbps full duplex and at school my connection in my dorm is just 10Mbps half duplex. The reason why I am asking this is because at school VNC runs really smooth, almost like I am at the computer, but at home everything has a short delay before a command takes effect. So, I have come to the conclusion that the higher end equipment switches the packets faster than the workgroup switch I have at home. Have I concluded correctly or is it just the fact that I am using slower computers at home than at school. The computer listed in my sig is the computer I have at school.
