Difference between FCPGA and PPGA slockets?

Is there a difference? I bought a Celeron 900 and a slocket from a guy on here a year ago, and it never worked in my motherboard. My mobo was buggy, so I figured that was the problem. I recently bought a new mobo (same one, P3V4X), and the Celeron still doesn't work!

So I did some more research on the slocket. All it says on the adapter is 370SP, no name brand anywhere. I searched the web, and the few english links I could find said this was a 66/100mhz PPGA slocket. The Celeron 900 runs 9x100, or 9x133 oc'ed.

I'm not sure what I should do, go back to the guy that sold it to me, or just buy another slocket. Or maybe the slocket isn't even the problem, maybe the Asus can't handle the chip (but that doesn't jive with what I've read), or maybe I have a power supply problem. I dunno.

PPGA is for Celeron processors up to 533MHz.

From the 533A onwards and all Coppermine processors (which is what your Celeron is), you need FC-PGA. Intel changed the pin definitions for FC-PGA processors. I know that the P3V4X doesn't have any problems with the processor you have, so it should be the slotket.

The only other thing that I can think of is that your BIOS may not be up-to-date, but generally you should be able to boot even if that were the case. You can always try and set the processor speed using the dipswitch block on that board.

thanks andy. i updated the bios with 1006.003, both on my new mobo and my old one. same results with both. no booting, no error beep.

now the question is: do i go back to the guy that sold me the chip and slocket? that was over a year ago. plus i left him some not-so-good heatware for the trade, which i didn't think went that great.

*edit* Andy, your user ID is the closest to mine that i've found! :)

I think you should try getting a new FCPGA slotket.

If at all possible, try and pick up an MSI 6905 slotket vers 2.3. I have two of them and they work in everything I have. I bought them on ebay for $18. The 2.3 is important, as earlier versions weren't as 100% compatible with the common BX boards at the time.
