Difference between EMF and Radiation?

EMF stands for ElectoMotive Force. It is a very general term, can be used for anything from batteries to generators, basicly anything capable of produceing a current can be labeled an EMF. All EMF do represent a certian amount of EM radiation, as any charge is surrounded by a E field, If the EMF is due to field interaction, then the presence of "radiation is obvious.

so how is radiation produced exactly? By E field or E fireld interaction? Is radiation a matter? Does our crt produce E field or radiation? Thanks.

Are we talking electromagnetic radiation or ionizing radiation. Are you worried about getting cooked like in microwave radiation or irradiated like in Chernobyl.

What kind of radiation are we talking? Alpha and Beta radiation is made of atomic particles; Gamma radiation is energy. Link with some good info. MMMMmmmmm, Google. :)

to me, emf means nothing until you tell us what emf is. i assume it's either electromagnetic force (like ross stated) or electromagnetic field which can be thought of a magnetic or electric field. the emforce would be the emfield's effect on some charged particle.

radiation is highly energetic particles being emitted from some source, if you boil down to it. These highly energetic particles can be thought of as particles such as photons or electrons or alpha or beta particles. usually radiation can be just thought of as photons which is what jeff7 meant by gamma being energy, since photons have no mass.

crts do produce radiation. They produce radio waves, UV, visible (so you can see) and infrared. but for the more "dangerous" as most ppl think, they dont produce nuclear radiation. Those "4" types of radiation are just photons. CRT screens have coatings on them to minimize the uv coming from them as to reduce your exposure. radio waves are just an effect of electronics. visible LIGHT is so you can see, obviously. infrared comes from the fact that they heat up. clearly with shielding and the coating, the radiation produced is not radiation you experience.

CRTs also implement a magnetic field, cuz they have magnets in them. They also work with electric fields, obviously, since there is electricity involved.

how is radiation produced?

for photons, it's BASICALLY, when an electron falls from one energy band from another. The energy lost by the electron is emitted in the form of a photon. What form of radiation (within the spectrum) depends on the wavelength of the photon. for nuclear radiation, it's similar, the unstable nucleus causes alpha and beta particles to be ejected out.

all radiation appears to be a means by which some particle or system wants to be at the lowest energy state possible, thus ejecting energy in the form of photons or particles smaller than itself. radiation is pretty much like exhaust, but generally at the atomic level, if you will.

if you take my definition of radiation above, electricity is a type of radiation as well. electricity is pretty much moving electrons. So there is an electric field involved, as well as magnetic field, since they are related through maxwell's equations.

is radiation a matter? i dont know what you mean. does it matter? yes it does. UV causes skin cancer. nuclear radiation causes other cancers due to the higher energy levels allowing nuclear radiation to penetrate further into the body than skin cancer. do all radiation produce cancer? NO! visible light is a type of radiation, so are radio waves, and everything else.
