Difference between DVI and DVI-D?

does anybody know the difference?

DVI-I contains wires for both analog and digital signals. That's why you can have a converter that converts DVI to VGA. A DVI-D cable or connector only contains the digital signal.

so a plain DVI cable is better?
Im trying to get a HDMI-DVI cable to hookup my HTPC w/ DVI to my TV which has HDMI

D = digital

I figured that, but are they different pin sizes or what?

Slightly different pin configuration, as I found out when I bought the wrong cable from Radioshack for my computer (when they were all on sale for like $10). I think there was one extra pin on the DVI cable. I guess I could have cut it out, but I just exchanged for a different cable.

The DVI specification allows for a connector to contain both the new digital signals and the old VGA signals. I think a connector/cable that fully supports this is called a DVI-I connector/cable. A DVI-D connector/cable only supports the digital signal.

For your purposes a DVI-D cable is fine since I think HDMI is purely a digital connection so the additional pins/wires for the analog signal won't be used. Get whichever is cheaper.
