What's the difference between a DVD and a Video CD? Is there a quality difference? Can a video CD be played on a regular DVD player (i.e. a home theater component)?

in my opinion DVDs have a much much better quality than VCDs do, as VCDs are usually in MPEG file format and depends on the quality of the MPG file. If you have a poor mpg file and burn it into a VCD, its still not going to be as good as the movie on DVD. Some DVD players can read VCDs, while others can't, mainly the older versions. Most new DVD players can play VCDs. PS2 doesn't play VCDs.

DVDs are much higher quality than VCDs. VCD's usually hit VHS to S-VHS quality which is no where close to DVD. DVD's are MPEG-2 files.
