Difference between double- and single sided memory?

Can someone please explain the difference between double- and single sided memory? I want to know how I can recognize it, and wich of the two types better performs.

There is no difference in performance between single sided and double sided memory. Single sided RAM has chips on only one side of the PCB. Double sided has chips on both sides.

In cases where RAS lines supported by the chipset may be limited, it's usually best to buy single sided RAM. This gives you more flexiblity if you wish to add more RAM later.

single sided means , you can't run 128 MB dimm on an lx chipset. Double sided you can. Difference in banks ,, is supported only in certain combinations. ie.. on some boards, you can only double sided if the first two slots are populated by single sided. Different boards have different combinations, most settings are usually documented in the manual.
